Films drag in the views easily, you may think, but a lot of work goes into marketing the film:
Two types of advertising, that are popular, are Viral and Outdoor. Viral advertising is just Internet and Mobile Phone marketing. Outdoor is basically everything outdoors so bill boards, bus sides and bus shelters. Shrek has the advantage of the internet and the TV where as Bambi only had the likes of wall posters and billboards. Shrek has this and the Internet which leaves Shrek with this advantage of the 21st century. The cinema & film go together like sponge and custard but there's one aspect of the film industry that most people forget; the merchandise side of it is a huge part and as disney have proved it can make you more money than the actual film. proof of this is the fact that bambi have since released a sequel and shrek has a musical and a game.
Historical codes are little pieces of the media text that connote the age or date that the text was set in, the shrek poster is a good example of text that contains alot of historical codes.

A few things in this poster give you the feeling that this text was set in the medievel times one of them being (obviously) the castle in the background this is a classic example of historical coding this places the set time in the medievel times along with the cobbled floor, which is a common ornament of that era, and the dragon (you may be thinking how is a dragon from medievel times) the dragon is a big part of medeivel times as it was often used character in stories and plays from tha era.
Symbolic codes, simliar to historical codes in that they both help you determine the type of film you are watching. Symbolic codes shows you not the era of the text but the type of text, be it comedy, horror, romance, adction or whatever this is quite obviously a comedy this is evident as regardless of the the chasing dragon and the fire they're all still smiling so its promising that no-one gets seriously hurt.
Binary Opposites; this is the thought that in every film there are two things that stand out as opposites examples include such things as beauty and the beast, Dragon and Shrek, Fire and Water and all those others that spring to mind. Shrek consists of a couple of binary opposites one of these being human and ogre (shrek and fiona) and donkey and the dragon.
An enigma is a bit of a puzzle it gives a sense of the unknown which draws the viewers in as they become curious and they come to view your film enigmas can lead also to a big finish when its all revealed and this
can make a film very effective.
Shrek is a classic example of Todorov's theory; equilibrium - at the beggining there is shrek in his little home (the swamp) disruption - donkey comes into his life and turns it upside down then he meets fiona aswell which at first is abit of a bind to him but he becomes in love with her. resolution - they defeat lord farquad and shrek and fiona get together. (and they all live hapil ever after)
Target audience for this film is a wide spread one, mainly children but to take children to the cinema adults will attend as well this has been noticed, and thanks to that there is little added humorous parts to give the adults a bit to laugh about.
Lets talk about Camera Shots in the Shrek poster we have a long shot as you can fully see all of their body and even the dragon. It's also a low angle shot as it makes shrek look like a big fat ogre but the dragon still has the most power in that poster.
The Mode Of Address in Shrek is informal as its for children and its not posh in anyway and its direct as they are look directly at you in the poster. indirect would make the characters not looking at the viewers.

ReplyDeleteSome good groundings here Ben. However, you need to be more specific when analysing the film posters. You need to apply the theories to the posters and not the film itself - the Shrek poster shows the disruption element. The uses and gratifications theory is not fully explained either. You need to be more precise about the effects of techniques on the audience.
